Tackle Tough Spring Cleaning Jobs With These Essential Oils

It’s time for spring cleaning! And what better way to clean and freshen your home than with essential oils.

When used to create a homemade cleaning blend, essential oils do more than smell nice (although they do smell nice.) Several of these oils have antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that can help disinfect, purify, and remove stains – just make sure to test a small area as oils can damage some surfaces.

You can use whatever homemade cleaning blends you prefer, but below is a basic all-purpose house cleaner we like that you can customize with your preferred essential oils, if you would like.

All-Purpose House Cleaner

Combine the following into a glass 16-ounce spray bottle:

  • ¼ cup white vinegar.
  • 1-¾ cups water.
  • 30 drops essential oil of your choice (see our recommendations below).
  • Close the lid, shake it up, and go!

You can use your favorite essential oil or oil blend for this cleaner. A few we like include:

  • Lavender and lemon (15 drops each).
  • Eucalyptus, wild orange, and peppermint (10 drops each).
  • Lemon (30 drops).
  • Grapefruit and wild orange (15 drops each).

Try not to exceed 30 drops total with this formula. Using too much won’t help, and the aroma may become overpowering, or you may wind up damaging surfaces.

Lemon Essential Oil

There’s a reason that so many bathrooms, kitchens, and home cleaning products have a lemon or citrusy scent: lemon smells fresh and clean. Lemon essential oil also does what it smells like. Add some to homemade laundry detergent, and it will help brighten your whites, or add a few drops to a gallon of water to wash tile floors and watch dirt and grime lift away!

Peppermint Essential Oil

Create a Birth Plan

Deciding how you want to give birth is important. Many women choose not to use drugs or epidurals during childbirth, and that choice has become known as natural childbirth. It’s not an easy choice, but it can be done. If this is the route you choose to go, you’ll want to prepare. Items such as a cervical dilator set and techniques such as lamaze breathing can help. Here are some of the main things you need to do when creating a solid birth plan

  • Find a health care provider that supports your choice for a natural childbirth

Practice Breathing

Breathing through the pain is key during a natural childbirth. Most people are pretty familiar with the term “Lamaze” breathing, but really any combination of patterned breathing exercise will work. Here’s how to do it. 

Early Labor 

  1. When each contraction begins, slowly take a deep breath and try to relax your body’s muscles as you slowly let the air back out. Focus all of your attention on your breathing.
  2. Continue to breathe. Slowly inhale through your nose for five seconds and exhale through your mouth, while counting to eight. It might help you maintain your focus if you count out loud. Pause and repeat until the contraction is over. 

Active Labor

  1. Take a cleansing breath.
  2. Slowly take a deep breath in. When you breathe out, make a “hee” sound three times, followed by one long “hoo” sound.
  3. When the contraction ends, return to your normal breathing again.

Transitional Labor

  1. Breathe normally until you feel the irresistible need to push.  
  2. Then take a deep breath. Hold the air in while you push hard for 5-7 seconds. 
  3. Exhale any remaining air after pushing, then and breathe normally until you feel the next strong urge to push.
  4. Keep repeating the process until the baby is born.
