Essential Oils Lip Balm Recipes

essential oil lip balm

Essential oils are highly concentrated extracts from plants that “retain the natural smell and flavor of their source.”

What does “highly concentrated” mean? Take this example: It takes 220 pounds of lavender flowers to make one pound of lavender essential oil.

People use essential oils in countless ways, including aromatherapy, as part of natural home cleaning products, in cosmetics, to support health and wellness, and much more.

One cosmetic use for essential oils is in essential oil lip balms. Their growing popularity means that many essential oil fans find themselves looking for essential oil lip balm recipes.

Here are a few!

Essential Oil Lip Balm Recipes

If you have a basic, go-to lip balm recipe or method you like to use, feel free to use that as your base. If you’re looking for a new method, or if you’ve never made your lip balm before, here is a basic ingredient list to start from.

Basic Lip Balm Recipe

The four main ingredients you will need are:

  1. Beeswax or soy wax.
  2. Butter.
  3. Carrier oil.
  4. Several drops of your favorite essential oils.

Recipes will vary slightly, but as a rule of thumb, your wax, butter, and carrier oil should be at a 1:1:1 ratio. If you use two teaspoons of beeswax, you should include two teaspoons of butter, such as shea butter and two teaspoons of oil, such as grapeseed oil. You can mix and match oils and kinds of butter to your preference.

Good carrier butter or oils for lip balms include:

  • Shea butter.
  • Cocoa butter.
  • Mango butter.
  • Coconut oil.
  • Almond oil.
  • Grapeseed oil.
  • Jojoba oil.

Remember, it’s going on your face, so the quality of ingredients in your lip balm is very important. When choosing beeswax for lip balm, make sure that it’s pure, unfiltered, unbleached, cosmetic grade beeswax. Similarly, the oils and butter you use should be raw or unrefined and always organic.

Supplies

  • Ingredients listed below, plus lip balm container.
  • Saucepan.
  • A funnel (optional, but will make pouring from the saucepan into lip balm containers easier and less messy).

Ingredients

  • Beeswax pastilles or soy wax.
  • Your choice butter.
  • Your choice carrier oil.
  • Several drops of your chosen essential oil.

Instructions

  1. Place all of the ingredients into a small saucepan and heat on the stove over low-medium. Stir occasionally.
  2. Once the beeswax and shea butter have melted, remove the saucepan from heat.
  3. Pour mixture into lip balm containers.
  4. Let lip balm cool and set for at least 20 minutes. Do not refrigerate, and do not touch while setting.

Best Essential Oils for Lip Balm

Use these oils alone, or in combination, using the instructions above. To start, we recommend 4 tablespoons beeswax, 4 tablespoons shea butter, 4 tablespoons almond oil, and 6-10 total drops of a single oil (or 4-5 drops of two different oils each).

Some of the most popular essential oils for lip balm recipes include:

  • Peppermint.
  • Lavender.
  • Tea tree.
  • Lemon balm.
  • Bergamot.
