Research has found that using essential oils may relieve pain, fatigue, and reduce muscle stiffness in people suffering from RA and other conditions, like fibromyalgia. 

A comprehensive 2016 study published in Pain Management Nursing measured the effectiveness of two different complementary treatments (aromatherapy massage and reflexology) on the severity of pain and fatigue experienced by participants who had been diagnosed with RA for at least a year.

The study found that both patients treated with reflexology and those treated with aromatherapy massage experienced a significant affect on both pain and fatigue compared to those in the control group. 

While this comprehensive study looked specifically at the effects of aromatherapy massage, there may be wider applications in the use of aromatherapy to support joint health and reduce pain.

Research finds that aromatherapy with essential oils could, as one study in the Journal of Muscle and Joint Health determined, “decrease joint pain, tenderness, and swelling in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.” 

Yet another study examined the effect of aromatherapy with essential oils (specifically a blend of lavender, marjoram, eucalyptus, rosemary, and peppermint essential oils) on arthritis patients, and found that aromatherapy “significantly decreased both the pain score and the depression score” for those treated with aromatherapy, compared to those who were not.

While continued and ongoing research is still needed in this area, there is a promising amount of preliminary data that suggests that various forms of aromatherapy may support joint health and decrease pain and fatigue symptoms in those with RA, fibromyalgia, and other conditions.
